The theater seats from the 1950s are a testament to the design and craftsmanship of that era. They are not as starkly modernist or devoid of ornamentation as became the norm a decade later.
In the 1950s, it was still common for theater seating to have a sturdy construction and richly decorated details, as seen in the side panels of these chairs. Additionally, they often featured upholstered armrests that added both robustness and aesthetic appeal. The deep red velvet was a favored choice—exuding luxury while being practical. Its texture absorbed light well and concealed minor wear and tear.
On our exhibit, the passage of time has certainly left its mark.
