Description

The Symphonion polyphon with a double comb is a rare treasure today and was among the finest and best-sounding mechanical musical automata at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Manufactured by the German company Symphonion Musikwerke, based in Leipzig, it was a major competitor to renowned firms such as Regina and Lochmann.
The double comb (or Double Comb) meant that the instrument featured two rows of tuned steel reeds, designed to produce a richer, louder, and more harmonious sound compared to standard models with a single comb. This allowed for clearer tones, longer resonance, and greater dynamic range. Some versions were even equipped with a special resonant casing to amplify bass tones—though this particular example does not include that feature.
