An example of a small home polyphon, likely from the late 19th century and crafted by an unknown maker. This device operates on a mechanism involving perforated metal discs and a musical movement. Each hole in the disc activated a cylinder with protrusions that, in turn, struck tuned metal reeds. These reeds produced the instrument’s distinctive “angelic” sound.
Unlike modern instruments, polyphons lacked any amplifying elements, which limited their volume—especially this type, featuring metal reeds.
