This armchair blends the elegance of Art Deco with the austere clarity of Bauhaus functionalism, while also bearing the distinctive signature of the legendary Thonet brand—renowned for its bentwood furniture since the 19th century.
It was designed by Lajos Kozma, a Hungarian architect and designer active with the company in the 1920s and 1930s. Kozma was celebrated for fusing the decorative flair of Art Deco with the modernist principles of Bauhaus—simplicity, functionality, and geometric purity. Chairs like this were created in collaboration with Thonet-Mundus, which at the time produced furniture for avant-garde architects and designers across Europe.
These chairs often combined solid wood with woven rattan or cane, lending them a sense of lightness and airiness while maintaining durability. Their shape was ergonomically refined—with a gently angled backrest, a central rear leg, wide armrests, and a low-slung profile, making them the perfect lounge chairs.
