The Edison Gem D, released in 1899, was designed to be compact, affordable, and easily portable. However, despite these practical intentions, it was an unexpectedly beautiful device housed in a heavy metal casing.
Its deep red chassis and horn speaker immediately set it apart from the more common black models, which were typically encased in wooden cabinets. Though simple in design, the Gem D was exceptionally well-crafted. Originally sold for $7.50, its price doubled over the next decade, reflecting both its quality and enduring appeal.
