Description

The Graphophone—an early phonograph cylinder recorder in its pioneering form—was a remarkable innovation. The name "Dictaphone" was trademarked in 1907 by the Columbia Graphophone Company, which became its leading manufacturer. Over the years, the device acquired numerous registered American patents.
One striking feature of this particular model is the complete absence of wood. Instead, it is housed in a black cast-metal casing, lending it a distinctive appearance. Given its compact size, it is no surprise that the weight exceeds 12 kilograms.
Originally, Graphophones used a foot pedal to rotate the cylinder. Later versions adopted a wind-up mechanism akin to a clock, and eventually, they were equipped with electric motors.
The mouthpiece of the sound conduit is made of Bakelite, but in more luxurious models, it was also crafted from tortoiseshell.
